Are bats in your attic? Are bats in your garage? Are bats invading your home?
If
so, Wildlife Solutions has the answer to your bat problem. Think of us
as your bat control expert. Bats are essential to the health of our
natural world. They help control pests and are vital pollinators and
seed-dispersers for countless plants. Yet these wonderfully diverse and
beneficial creatures are among the least studied and most misunderstood
of animals.
There are more than 1,100 species of bats – about
one-fifth of all mammal species. The may species of bats are incredibly
diverse. They range from the world's smallest mammal, the tiny bumblebee
bat that weighs less than a penny, to giant flying foxes with six-foot
wingspans. Except for the most extreme desert and polar regions, bats
have lived in almost every habitat on Earth since the age of the
dinosaurs.
Bats are primary predators of night-flying insects,
including many of the most damaging agricultural pests and others that
bedevil the rest of us. More than two-thirds of bat species hunt
insects, and they have healthy appetites. A single little brown bat can
eat up to 1,000 mosquito-sized insects in a single hour, while a
pregnant or lactating female bat typically eats the equivalent of her
entire body weight in insects each night.
Almost a third of the
world's bats feed on the fruit or nectar of plants. In return for their
meals, these bats are vital pollinators of countless plants and
essential seed dispersers with a major role in regenerating rainforests.
A small percentage of bats eat fish, mice, frogs or other small
vertebrates.
Bats bodies are designed so it does not take much
energy for them to hang upside down. They are able to lock their feet in
place and the weight of the body hanging upside down keep the bats in
place and allows them to rest with no real work required. Hanging upside
down also allows the bat to hide in unique places away from danger and
to take off in flight easily; they simply fall from high above and then
are off flying!
Bats can fit into openings as small as ½ inch,
making almost every man-made structure a potential hiding places. Some
of the places that bats have been found in man-made structures include
but are not limited to:
Attics
Storage sheds
Barns
Unused and open structures
Chimneys
Louvers
Soffits
Siding
Eaves
Roof tiles and shingles
Behind shutters
Large
colonies of bats usually leave behind a large amount of waste. Bat
guano (excrement) can become hazardous to humans and pets, if left
untreated within the structure.
Bat damage can become expensive if the problem is not eradicated at its root.
